1 March 1979: Musical matters
I have spent most of the afternoon writing letters to people of importance stressing once again the need for witches and wizards to be able to perform magic where and when they need to do so without the fear of the Ministry sweeping down upon them and making their lives difficult. As I often enjoy listening to music while writing my opinions and ideas, I have been listening to the WWN and I have an opinion.

I suppose that would surprise nobody who knows me, but I am certain there are some who do not, so I felt it necessary to state.

The music of this era is simply dreadful. It is a combination of loud percussion and overdone vocals that does not resemble notes and melodies. Even the most talented of the musicians of the past, oh, shall we say decade, cannot hold a candle to the greats of the early part of this century. This Stubby Boardman that they keep playing? A dreadful howler. I'm fairly certain a werewolf recorded and laid over music would have better musical sensibilities than this chap might have. Now Boudicca Radford? There is a woman who knows her notes. Her range is superb and her musical sensibilities subtle and refined. You'll find no overdone anything on her records, just an understanding of melody and harmony, point and counterpoint that is a genuine pleasure to listen to.

My dear Rookwood, you were so interested in when my next performance would be, that I feel obligated to tell you that I shall be out in Nottinghamshire on the morrow. I guarantee no performance, of course, but should the need arise, you know I shall not shirk from it.

Your letter? Ah yes, because you are important

Well, I haven't precisely sent out the owls with them yet, so you wouldn't have received it at this point.

Yes because

Oh, thank you! I was worried for a moment. Nottinghamshire is rather broad - any specific city or town? Being everywhere at once is near impossible.

Speaking of music, why so much negativity? The bands at least play instruments; you must give them credit for that, if only that, alone.

Well, yes, they do play instruments, if you can indeed call it 'playing' instruments. The main source of my negativity, is the rather large headache I seem to have developed after listening to several modern artists. I have resorted to turning off the Wireless and pulling out some of my own albums.

I suppose I'm also a bit worried about the musical education of some of the young people these days. If they are being raised to believe this is music, it cannot bode well for the future culture of the wizarding world can it?

Not to be cliche, but I was thinking Nottingham itself, perhaps.

If you need good vocals, shall I come visit and serenade you some time?

Didn't music like Boardman's begin with the muggles? Not to place the blame upon them...but it is fairly new. Secondly, Hogwarts does not offer any music lessons or classes, and the choice rests entirely upon the shoulders of the child, as well as their parents. Thank goodness I was raised by two lovers of the arts and especially fine music.

Nottingham is not cliché at all. Now, would it be cliché to mention that I listen to symphony and opera the most?

You can sing Mr Rookwood? I had absolutely no idea. I suppose Boardman's music might have began with the Muggles. I must confess that I know very little about Muggle music, outside of that which has been around for many centuries.

The symphony is never cliche, dear Mr Rookwood, however the opera can border on it at times. You would think they believe that because they set a story to music they can tell the same one ten times over. Perhaps I'll go to the symphony tomorrow eve, now that I think on it. I think that would be a lovely way to spend the evening.
